Sergeant Arthur A. Scarafile
May 8, 1986
Died in an auto accident in the Town of Frankfort, Herkimer
County. The engine on a dump truck loaded with eighteen tons of gravel stalled
and lost its steering and braking power on a curve. The truck skidded into the
opposite lane and struck Sergeant Scarafile's troop car head-on even though
he had pulled onto the shoulder. The truck and troop car continued into a field,
with the truck overturning onto the troop car.
Trooper Robert A. Dunning
June 14, 1987
Died from gunshot wounds after responding to a complaint
of a neighbor being threatened with a gun. Trooper Dunning and fellow officer
Sergeant Garzetta were confronted by an assailant with a high-powered rifle.
After a period of negotiation the man opened fire, fatally wounding Trooper
Dunning and seriously wounding Sergeant Garzetta. Sergeant Garzetta returned
fire striking the assailant three times. The subject then turned the rifle on
himself.
Trooper Alvin P. Kurdys
September 15, 1987
Died in an auto accident on the New York State Thruway,
Town of Pembroke, Genesee County. Trooper Kurdys was killed instantly when a
speeding car struck him while he was working a traffic assignment.
Trooper Thomas J. Consorte
November 23, 1987
Died in an auto mishap at the intersection of a Long Island
highway in the Town of Riverhead, Suffolk County. Trooper Consorte was preparing
to mark the scene in the aftermath of an accident in which his troop car had
been struck and disabled following a motorist failing to yield the right of
way. Trooper Consorte was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by another
motorist while he attempted to retrieve flares from the trunk of his patrol
car.
The New York State Police are now recruiting.
