
Died in an auto accident on Route 7 in
the Town of Otego, Otsego County, after another driver fell asleep, crossed
the center line and struck Trooper Juna head-on while he was enroute to his
station.
Died from asphyxiation on Route 5 in the
Town of Herkimer, Herkimer County, while parked at a gas station observing traffic
with his partner, trooper Novier. Trooper George had unknowingly backed into
a snow bank, blocking the exhaust pipes. Investigator Restante while enroute
to SP Herkimer spotted the vehicle, stopped and attempted to revive the troopers.
Trooper Novier responded, but George did not.
Died on Route 219 at Carpenter Road in
the Town of Hamburg, Erie County, when his vehicle left the road and struck
a tree and two telephone poles after he fell asleep at the wheel.
Died in an auto accident on Route 17 in
the Town of Sanford, Broome County. While enroute from a gambling raid a tire
blew out on his vehicle. The car went off of the road, struck a sign and the
embankments of cement culvert and then overturned.
Died from injuries received in a car accident
on Route 17 in Monticello, Sullivan County on November 20, 1970.
Died from gunshot wounds on East Lake Road,
Richfield Springs near Schuyler Lake, Otsego County. Trooper Semrov followed
a subject down the road to his cottage and requested a drivers license and registration.
The subject entered his house under the pretense of procuring those items. The
subject came out of his residence shooting, and shot Trooper Semrov in the face
and neck five times with a .22 cal rifle. He then struggled with the Trooper
Semrov and took his .38 caliber service revolver, shooting him a sixth time.
The subject on the advise of his father called the New York State Police and
admitted his guilt. He then washed off the service revolver and placed it on
the hood of the troop car, surrendering without incident to the arriving troopers.
Died at the Albany Medical Center after
seizing hypodermic needles and syringes from an informant who had contracted
serum hepatitis. Investigator McCully had open cuts and blisters on his hands
at the time of the seizure.
Died of a gunshot wound to the chest when
he was accidentally shot by a NYPD detective during a drug arrest. Members of
the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force were completing a drug deal when the
surveillance team approached. One of the officer's weapon went off, mortally
wounding Investigator Grosso.
Died after being shot in the chest with
a shotgun on June 30, 1974 at 1237 Rockhaven Beach Road, in the Town of Torrey,
Yates County. Trooper Dodge investigated a property line dispute between two
neighbors who owned adjoining lakefront cottages on the shores of Seneca Lake.
He returned to the residence of one subject after a second complained concerning
the removal of a property line stake and was invited into the cottage. The subject
then pointed a 12 gauge shotgun at Trooper Dodge who attempted to knock it out
of his hand, but missed and was immediately shot. Trooper Dodge returned fire
with six rounds and shot the assailant three times in the legs and chest. The
assailant then stumbled to the front porch and fired one shot at random before
collapsing.
Died after being shot on the New York State
Thruway, 1 mile west of the Canastota interchange in the Town of Lenox, Madison
County, while checking a vehicle. In the vehicle were a driver and one passenger
hiding in the rear seat who told Trooper Dillon to stand still, but when Trooper
Dillon drew his service revolver anyway, he was shot. Trooper Dillon returned
fire with two rounds into the car. The subjects left the scene and crashed through
a barricaded exit gate at Exit 34. Dillon returned to his car before he collapsed.
It is believed that it was unknown to Trooper Dillon that the subjects had just
robbed a Dewitt jewelry store and taken $132,000 in cash and merchandise. The
two vehicle occupants were caught within 1 1/2 hours. A total of five NYC suspects
were arrested.
Died from gunshot wounds on Kings Highway
in the hamlet of Sugar Loaf, Town of Chester, Orange County, when he responded
to a complaint of shots being fired. Upon his arrival, the suspect, Chris S.
Georgeades, shot him twice in the thigh after being told to surrender by McDonagh.
Georgeades then went around the troop car and shot him once in the forehead
with a .22 cal. rifle, killing Trooper McDonagh instantly. Georgeades then took
Trooper McDonagh's service revolver and ammo. He then made a radio transmission
on the troop car radio that he had shot a trooper and would not be taken alive.
Georgeades was shot at the scene when he engaged other responding troopers in
a gun battle, using his rifle and Trooper McDonagh's revolver.
Died in an auto accident in the City of
Watertown, Jefferson County, when an intoxicated driver crossed the center line
and struck his car head-on.
