Trooper John J. Cahill
February 22, 1930

Died in a motorcycle accident on the Albany-Schenectady Road, Town of Colonie, Albany County, when a tire blew out causing him to swerve into an oncoming auto. Trooper Cahill was killed instantly when he was thrown 60 feet from his motorcycle. The .45 cal Colt Revolver that he was carrying at the time of the accident was never found.


Trooper John L. Furlong
March 31, 1930


Died on the Saratoga-Mechanicville Highway after his auto left the road and struck a telephone pole.


Trooper Edward J. Sweeney
May 17, 1930


Died in a motorcycle accident at the intersection of the Sunrise Highway and Babylon Turnpike, Nassau Co., when a truck came through the intersection and struck his motorcycle.


Corporal Leroy J. Baker
August 24, 1930


Died on the Caroga Lake-Johnstown highway at Newkirks, Fulton County. Corporal Baker was electrocuted while removing a broken utility pole from the road at an accident scene. 2300 volts went through his body throwing him several feet.


Trooper James M. MacLarnon
January 19, 1931


Died when struck by an auto at the intersection of Eastern Ave. and Merrick Road, Bellmore LI, Nassau County. Trooper MacLarnon was struck by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, as he and his patrol partner were crossing the street.


Sergeant John E. Frey
March 18, 1931


Died after being shot through the heart on the Troy-East Greenbush Road, Rensselaer County, while transporting prisoners to the Rensselaer County Jail. Sergeant Frey was transporting a prisoner in the prisoner's veh, while another trooper, Trooper Updyke, was transporting another in a troop car. Hidden in the vehicle belonging to the prisoner was the gun used to shoot Sergeant Frey.


Trooper Garland Blair
October 12, 1931


Died in an auto accident on the Saw Mill River Road, Westchester County, while returning from investigating a complaint at Mahopac Falls. The troop car was being operated by another trooper when it attempted to avoid a head-on collision with a vehicle being operated on the wrong side of the road. The troop car swerved and turned over, killing Trooper Blair.


Corporal Martin E. Ryan
November 26, 1931


Died after an auto accident that occurred on November 25, 1931 near Sugarbush, on the Saranac Lake-Plattsburgh Highway, Franklin County, when his troop car left the road, rolled over several times and struck a tree. Corporal Ryan and his partner were both ejected.


Corporal Theophlius Gaines
January 15, 1932

A communications expert, died in a State Police airplane crash at Cazenovia, NY, Town of Fenner, Madison County, while being transported from SP Batavia to SP Oneida for a teletypewriter system inspection. The pilot Lieutenant Tremain M. Hughes, operating a fleet biplane owned by the New York State Police, was apparently following the Cazenovia-Peterboro Road when the plane struck an elm tree, crashed, and burst into flames. Lieutenant Hughes was trapped in the rear cockpit of the burning plane, while Corporal Gaines was thrown clear of the wreck and killed instantly.

January 15, 1932


Died in an airplane crash, see Theophlius Gaines - above.


Trooper Raymond J. Chippendale
August, 12, 1932


Died when his motorcycle collided head-on with an auto on the Herrings Carthage Road.


Trooper Vincent A. Dunn
September 30, 1932


Died after an auto accident on Route 22, Patterson, NY, after his auto ran off the highway, struck one utility pole and then another. Trooper Dunn apparently fell asleep at the wheel while returning to SP Brewster from a night off.


Sergeant Walter A. Purcell
March 31, 1933

Died in an auto accident at Scotia on the Scotia-Amsterdam Highway while enroute to milk strike duty at East Avon.


Sergeant Homer J. Harrison
June 19, 1933


Died in a boating accident on Silver Lake, Town of Castile, Wyoming County.


Trooper Jerome B. Nugent
October 13, 1933


Died from injuries that occurred in a motorcycle accident on October 13, 1933 on the Forestville-Sheridan Road, in the Town of Sheridan, Chautauqua Co. Trooper Nugent was thrown from his motorcycle when a large German Shepherd either ran into or was hit by his motorcycle.
