Trooper Andrew J. Lawrence
September 17, 1926

Died after a motorcycle accident which occurred on September 12, 1926, near Hudson, NY, Columbia County, When his motorcycle left the highway, skidded and crashed.


Trooper Charles M. McGinn
June 20, 1927


Died after a motorcycle accident which occurred on June 18, 1927, in the Village of Remsen, when an automobile backed out of a driveway, and into his path, while in pursuit of a speeding car.


Sergeant Harry J. Wheeler
July 15, 1927


Died at the Duross underpass, Town of Sherrill, when an on coming auto forced his motorcycle against the walls of the underpass during a thunderstorm.


Lieutenant Walter Croasdale
August 22, 1927


Died due to injuries suffered in an auto accident which occurred on August 16, 1927, on the Tully-Lafayette Highway. Lieutenant Croasdale was operating the car of Captain Besse, Troop M (National Guard), when it collided with a 10-ton steam roller parked across the roadway without lights. Lieutenant Croasdale's Rough Riders had just performed at the Cortland County Fair. Captain Besse had been showing horses at the fair.


Trooper Robert Roy
September 8, 1927


Died on September 8, 1927, from a gunshot wound to the head, See Arnold T. Rasmussen - below. The troopers allowed a defendant, Wilmont LeRoy Wagner, to go upstairs to retrieve his coat. Trooper Roy waited at the front door, and Trooper Rasmussen at the back. While upstairs, Wagner shot Rasmussen from the window. When Roy responded, he was also shot.


Trooper Arnold T. Rasmussen
September 8, 1927


Died on September 8, 1927 in the Town of Caneadea, Allegany County, after being shot in the head along with Trooper Roy. Both troopers were attempting to serve a petit larceny warrant on Wilmont LeRoy Wagner, who fled the scene and was arrested in Tioga PA by the New York State Police after a 17-day manhunt. Wagner was found guilty and executed in the electric chair at Sing-Sing Prison on June 21, 1928. The original petit larceny warrant was for stealing $6.48 worth of auto parts.


Trooper Ernest M. Simpson
December 1, 1927


Died in an auto accident in the Village of Bainbridge, Chenango County, when a vehicle with faulty brakes struck his troop car as it traveled through an intersection. Simpson's vehicle flipped over, and pinned him inside.


Trooper John J. Lane
May 13, 1928


Died at SP Bayshore when he fell backwards over a stairway railing, landing on his head. Trooper Lane never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at the barracks.


Corporal Edward F. Dolphin
August 6, 1928


Died when he lost control of his motorcycle after hitting a hole in the road in Valhalla NY. Corporal Dolphin was thrown 100 feet from the motorcycle.


Trooper Carl T. Wilder
September 7, 1928


Died of a gunshot wound in the back, which occurred on the Tuxedo-Greenwood Lake Highway, in the Town of Tuxedo. A deputy Sheriff of New York County was changing a flat tire on his personal car when he saw Trooper Wilder lying on the road next to his motorcycle. Approximately eight inches from Trooper Wilder's had was a torn neck tie. This tie was the only piece of physical evidence ever found. A passerby stopped and took Trooper wilder to the hospital where he later died. Trooper Wilder never identified his killer(s).
